Theorem of the Day

Commercial AI interests have become a major presence in mathematical research. The Leiden Declaration is of great importance in making clear what is at stake and what options the future offers for our profession. But the incursion of AI into mathematics is revolutionary and evolutionary and we are looking to our figureheads for guidance as impact follows impact. I would cite particularly this by Timothy Gowers; the ICM 2026 address by Terence Tao, written up here, as well as his contributions on the Mastodon network; the Proofs and Prompts communal blog (e.g. this by Hugo Duminil-Copin); and the declaration "A Severe Misalignment of AI in Mathematics", signed at its inauguration by 25 Fields medal winners.
Our learned societies will contribute too, with authority but guardedly, for example regarding the Navier–Stokes announcement there are statements by the European Mathematical Society and by the London Mathematical Society.
This website is agnostic about the value of AI in mathematics. We hate that commercial AI finds value in, as Tao puts it, "the indiscriminate automated strip-mining of open problems". But this may only last as long as it bolsters product releases or investment drives. Thereafter, professionals with the skills and resources will use AI to enrich mathematics, as they are already doing (see the wonderful 'digestion' of the AI proof of Sendov's conjecture by Tao, for example). And many without the skills and resources will continue to work productively as they always have, far from the frontiers where figureheads confront stochastic parrots.
